Sd, which a worn display can make look like 5d, means excess suds on an older Whirlpool top-load HE washer, the Cabrio and WTW family. Usually yes. The seven-segment display draws an S and a 5 almost identically, so Sd often looks like 5d. Both mean the same excess-suds alert.

Should I stop the washer when Sd appears?

No. The washer is already working to reduce the suds, and stopping it just leaves foam in the tub. Give it time, and expect a longer cycle than usual.

How do I stop the foam coming back?

Use HE detergent only, read the dose on the bottle for your load size, and use less than you think. Concentrated formulas need a small amount, and extra soap does not clean better.
