What Wash Light On or Flashing means
The Wash light stays on or flashes on an older Whirlpool top-load HE washer, the Cabrio and WTW family, when the water level has not changed for a while, or when water is present but the control cannot see the level move. If this happens while no wash cycle is running, the likely areas are the water supply and the drain hose setup. The washer may sit with the light lit, partly filled or not filling at all, and the cycle does not advance.
Common causes of Wash Light On or Flashing
- Hot or cold faucet not fully open
- Fill hose screens at the washer clogged with film or particles
- Drain hose installed incorrectly
- Water level sensing circuit, once supply and drain are confirmed
1. Open the hot and cold faucets all the way. 2. Turn the water off, remove the inlet hoses and rinse any film or particles from the valve screens. 3. Reinstall the hoses, turn the water on and look for leaks. 4. Check the drain hose against the installation instructions, then restart.
- A free-flowing supply and correct drain that still leave the light lit point to the level sensing.
- The Cabrio family is aging but still common. We repair it, and we say plainly if a repair is not worth the money.
- We confirm the fill and the drain before testing the sensor.

What does the Wash light mean here?
It tells you the control has not seen the water level change when it expected to. The cause may be little water coming in, or water present but not registering.
Is it safe to remove the fill hoses myself?
Yes, if you turn both faucets off first and keep a towel handy. Check the screens at the hose ends and rinse them out. Hand-tighten the hoses on reinstall and check for drips.
Could the drain hose cause this?
It can. A hose that is installed wrongly may siphon, letting water leave as fast as it enters, so the level never changes. Compare your setup with the installation instructions.
