What Rinse Light On means
A lit Rinse light on an older Whirlpool top-load HE washer, the Cabrio and WTW family, is normal. Some cycles use a spray rinse, which adds water to the tub while the basket spins. On models where Fabric Softener Yes is selected, you will also hear sounds like the wash phase as the washer moves the load, and the motor may turn on for a short hum to shift the basket while filling. None of this points to an error, and the washer is simply working through its rinse.
Common causes of Rinse Light On
- Spray rinse adding water while the basket spins
- Fabric Softener setting adding extra motion during the rinse
- Normal brief motor hum while filling
1. Leave the washer alone and let the rinse phase finish. 2. Avoid opening the lid while the basket is moving. 3. If clothes stay soapy, run a Rinse & Spin cycle afterward. 4. If the light stays on and nothing moves for a long time, schedule service.
- A rinse that never finishes would need us to check the water level sensing, the fill path and the drain.
- This is an older washer design that many homes still run. We repair it, and we say it plainly if a repair is not worth it.
- We quote in writing before any work.

Is a lit Rinse light a warning?
No. It shows the washer is in its rinse phase, which on some cycles uses a spray of water onto the spinning basket. The light going out is the sign that the phase is done.
Why does the washer sound like it is washing during rinse?
With Fabric Softener Yes selected on some models, the washer tumbles the load while it adds softener. The brief hum is the motor shifting the basket as water enters.
What if the Rinse light stays on forever?
Then something is holding the cycle, such as water not filling or not draining. Check the faucets and drain hose, then let us test the level sensing and the drain if it persists.
