What LdU means

LdU on an older Whirlpool top-load HE washer, the Cabrio and WTW family, means the lid cannot unlock. The washer has detected objects resting on the lid, such as a laundry basket, and that weight keeps the lid from releasing. The cycle may be finished while the lid stays shut, and the display holds LdU until the load on top is removed. It is usually a matter of what is sitting on the washer rather than a failed part.

Common causes of LdU

  • Laundry basket, detergent bottle or other items resting on the lid
  • Lid lock mechanism that is binding under pressure
  • Lid lock circuit, once the lid is clear
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Take everything off the top of the washer, including baskets and bottles. 2. Wait a minute, then try the lid again. 3. If it stays shut, press Power to turn the washer off and on once. 4. Start a short cycle. If LdU returns with a clear lid, schedule service.

Why would weight on the lid trigger LdU?

The lid sensor reads a load on top as a sign the lid cannot move freely, so the lock holds. Clearing the top of the washer removes that reading and lets the lock release.

Is LdU the same as LdL?

No. LdU is a lid that will not unlock, while LdL is a lid that will not lock. They sound alike but point to different moments in the cycle, so we check them separately.

Can I open the lid by force?

Please avoid it. Pulling hard can crack the lid or the latch. Remove the weight, wait for the lock to release, and call us if the lid is still stuck.
