What OFb or ofb means
OFb, which may show in lowercase as ofb, means the load is out of balance on an older Whirlpool top-load HE washer, the Cabrio and WTW family. The washer tried to correct the imbalance with its own routines and could not, so it now needs you to redistribute the load evenly around the wash plate. Until that happens, the cycle stays stopped or the spin will not begin. Shaking, loud thumping and wet clothes after the cycle are the usual signs.
Common causes of OFb or ofb
- Clothes tangled or bunched on one side of the wash plate
- Overloaded basket or a single heavy item
- Washer sitting unlevel on the floor
- Suspension or balance sensing, if loads are even and the code returns
1. Cancel the cycle with the Start button, or disconnect the power cord. 2. If water is still in the tub, run a drain-only cycle first. 3. Rearrange the clothes or remove some items so the load is level, and try the Bulky or Heavy Duty cycle. 4. If you only need the water out, run a Drain & Spin once the load is even.
- When even loads still bring up OFb, the leveling, suspension or balance sensing needs inspection.
- This older washer is still working in many laundry rooms. We repair it, and we are honest if the repair would not be worth the cost.
- We look at level and suspension before anything else and quote in writing.
Other Washer codes
Is OFb the same as ofb?
Yes. Some displays show the letters in capitals and others in lowercase. Both mean the load is out of balance and needs to be redistributed by hand.
Why does the washer stop instead of just spinning?
A badly unbalanced basket can slam into the cabinet and damage the suspension. The washer stops, shows OFb, and waits for you to rearrange the load safely.
What items cause an imbalance most often?
A single rug, a jacket or a pair of jeans washed alone. Mixing them with a few towels spreads the weight and keeps the basket steady during the spin.
