What Ld means
Ld on an older Whirlpool top-load HE washer, the Cabrio and WTW family, is the long drain alert. The display shows it when the washer takes too long to get rid of its water. The drain hose may sit more than 4.5 inches inside the standpipe, which lets water siphon back, or the hose may be kinked or clogged. You may find water still in the tub, a cycle that stalls before the spin, or damp clothes at the end.
Common causes of Ld
- Drain hose pushed too far into the standpipe
- Drain hose kinked or partly clogged
- Standpipe height or fit that lets the washer siphon
- Drain pump or its circuit, once the path is clear
1. Stop the cycle and make sure the washer has finished pumping or is unplugged. 2. Pull the drain hose back so it enters the standpipe no more than 4.5 inches, using the hose form as shipped. 3. Straighten any bend and clear the hose and standpipe of blockage. 4. Run a Drain & Spin cycle and see whether Ld returns.
- If the hose and standpipe are right and Ld persists, we cannot tell yet whether the pump is weak or partly blocked.
- These Cabrio-era washers are still running in a lot of homes. We repair them, and we will tell you straight if the repair is not worth making.
- We watch the drain flow before quoting a part.
Other Washer codes
Why does Ld depend on the standpipe?
If the hose is pushed too far in, or the standpipe is set too high, water can siphon, filling and draining at once. The washer then thinks the drain is too slow and shows Ld.
Can I tape the drain hose in place?
Please do not. The hose form should stay as shipped, and taping the hose to the pipe can seal the air gap that prevents siphoning. Just seat it loosely at the correct depth.
Is it safe to keep running loads with Ld?
Try one corrected cycle. If water stays in the tub or the code returns, stop and have the drain checked, since standing water can lead to odors and an overflow into the laundry room.
