What LoC means
LoC, or LC on some models, is not an error on a Whirlpool front-load washer from the Duet and WFW family, such as the WFW5620HW or WFW9150WW. It is a reminder that the Control Lock is active. While the lock is on, the buttons do nothing, and the display shows the code whenever you press one. You can still touch Start to pause a running cycle or Power to turn the washer off. Nothing has broken; the controls are only waiting for you to unlock them.
Common causes of LoC
- Control Lock turned on, on purpose or by a stray touch
- Control Lock set by a child or while cleaning the panel
1. Touch and hold the Control Lock button for about three seconds. 2. Watch the display count down 3, 2, 1 and then show LoC or LC as the lock changes state. 3. Press a cycle button to confirm the controls respond again. 4. If the lock will not release, unplug the washer for five minutes and try again.
- If the controls stay dead after unlocking and a power reset, we would need to test the keypad and the control.
- Older Duet washers are still in many homes. We repair them, and we tell you plainly when a repair does not make sense.
- We quote in writing before we do any work.

Why do my buttons do nothing?
The Control Lock is probably on. The display shows LoC or LC when you press a key. Holding the Control Lock button for about three seconds turns it off and brings the keys back.
Is LoC a sign of a problem with the control?
No. It is a normal reminder, built in so that children or stray touches cannot change a running cycle. The washer is working exactly as designed.
Can I still stop a cycle with the lock on?
Yes. Start still pauses the cycle, and Power turns the washer off. Everything else stays locked until you hold the Control Lock button again and release it.
Still unsure about LoC?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
