What PF means
PF means the washer lost power while it was running. It appears on Whirlpool front-load washers from the Duet and WFW family and on top-load HE washers in the Cabrio and WTW series. On some front-load models you can press Start to finish the cycle, while others need Cancel and a restart from the beginning. On a top-load washer, touch and hold Start to continue the wash, or press Power to clear the display. A storm, a tripped breaker or an unplugged cord is the usual cause.
Common causes of PF
- Power outage or brownout during the cycle
- Tripped breaker or GFCI outlet
- Loose plug or power cord
- Frequent PF with steady household power points to the control or power supply
1. Check whether the lights in the room and other outlets still work. 2. On a front-load, try Start to resume; if it won't, press Cancel and begin again. 3. On a top-load, touch and hold Start to restart, or press Power to clear. 4. Make sure the plug is fully seated and the breaker is on.
- If PF repeats without any outage, we would look at the outlet, the cord and the control.
- The Duet and Cabrio washers are older platforms still in many homes. We repair them, and we tell you plainly when a repair is not worth it.

Other Washer codes
Does PF mean my washer is damaged?
No. It records that power was lost during a cycle. The washer is usually fine. Resume or restart the cycle and check that it completes normally.
Why do I have to restart from the beginning on some models?
Different models handle an interrupted cycle differently. Some can resume where they stopped, while others cancel and require a fresh start. Your manual explains which type you own.
What if PF keeps coming back?
Check the outlet and breaker first. If the house power is steady and PF returns, the cord, plug or control may be dropping out, and we can test the supply for you.
Still unsure about PF?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
