What Sud means
Sud means there are too many suds in a Whirlpool washer, and the washer cannot spin the water out through the foam. On front-load Duet and WFW washers such as the WFW5620HW, it automatically stretches the rinse: tumbling pauses and extra water goes in so the bubbles can break, and this may repeat several times. On top-load HE washers, including older Cabrio models, it runs a suds reduction routine on its own. In both cases the right move is to let the washer work through it.
Common causes of Sud
- Detergent dose too large for the load
- Concentrated HE detergent used like an ordinary one
- Oversized pre-measured pac in a small or lightly soiled load
- Drain pump filter or drain path that slows foam removal
1. Let the washer keep rinsing; the pauses and extra water are part of its routine. 2. Use HE detergent only, and measure by the detergent maker's directions. 3. Pick smaller pacs for small loads. 4. If Sud returns with the right dose, clean the drain pump filter or schedule service.
- When the dose is correct and the foam still builds, we check the drain pump and the water level sensing.
- The Duet and Cabrio are older platforms still in many homes. We repair them, and we say plainly when a repair does not pay off.
- We quote in writing before any work.

Why does the washer keep pausing and filling?
It is breaking up the foam. The pause lets bubbles collapse, and the added water dilutes the suds so the drum can finally spin out. It can take several rounds.
Is Sud the same as Sd?
Yes. Some displays show Sud and others show Sd. They carry the same meaning and the same advice: wait, then use less detergent next time.
Can I add more water myself?
Please do not. The washer already adds rinse water on its own schedule. Extra water or an extra scoop of soap makes the foam worse. Let it complete the routine.
