What Lid Light Flashing means
A flashing Lid light on an older Whirlpool top-load HE washer, the Cabrio and WTW family, usually means the lid needs to be closed. Some washers will not fill or wash with the lid open, and if it stays open about 10 minutes the washer drains. The light can also flash right after you touch Start/Pause, when the washer self-tests the lid lock: you hear a click, the basket turns slightly, and the lid unlocks briefly before locking again. Opening the lid during sensing restarts the sensing.
Common causes of Lid Light Flashing
- Lid not closed completely
- Normal lid lock self-test just after starting
- Lid opened during sensing, restarting the process
- Lid lock or lid switch circuit, if the flashing persists with a closed lid
1. Close the lid fully and press Start/Pause again. 2. Listen for the click and the small basket turn that mark the lock self-test, and let it finish. 3. Do not open the lid during sensing. 4. If the light keeps flashing with the lid closed and no test sounds, schedule service.
- If the self-test never happens and the light keeps flashing, we cannot tell whether the lock or the switch is silent.
- A lot of homes still use this older washer. We repair it, and we say openly when a repair is not worth doing.
- We test the lock and switch in operation and quote before any work.

Is the flashing Lid light always a problem?
No. It can flash for a closed-lid reminder or during the lock self-test after Start. Wait a few seconds and close the lid. It matters only if it keeps flashing with the lid closed.
What is the lid lock self-test?
When you touch Start/Pause, the washer clicks the lock, gives the basket a small turn and lets the lid unlock briefly before locking again. It is normal and takes only a moment.
Why did my previous washer work with the lid open?
Some older washers filled and washed with the lid up. Many newer ones need it closed to fill, wash, drain, rinse and spin, and they drain after about 10 minutes of waiting.
