What Lid means
Lid on the display of an older Whirlpool top-load HE washer, the Cabrio and WTW family, is a message, not a failure. It means the lid was opened mid-cycle. Close the lid and the display clears. If the lid stays open for more than 10 minutes, the cycle resets and the water in the tub drains out. In that case, start the cycle over. Do not add more detergent, because the clothes are already soaked with water and detergent from the first start.
Common causes of Lid
- Lid opened during a cycle
- Lid left open longer than 10 minutes, resetting the cycle
- Lid switch not registering a closed lid
1. Close the lid fully and wait for the display to clear. 2. If the washer has drained after the lid stayed open, start the cycle over. 3. Do not add more detergent; the clothes already have it. 4. If Lid shows with the lid closed, schedule service.
- If Lid appears while the lid is closed, the lid switch or its wiring needs testing, and we cannot judge that from the outside.
- The washer is of an older design that plenty of households still run. We repair it, and we say so when a repair would not be worthwhile.
- The price is in writing before we begin.
Other Washer codes
Does Lid mean something broke?
No. It simply tells you the lid is open. Close it and the cycle resumes, unless it was left open past 10 minutes, in which case the cycle resets.
Why did my washer drain by itself?
After the lid has been open about 10 minutes, the washer cancels the cycle and pumps out the water. This protects against leaving a full tub unattended with the lid up.
What if Lid shows while the lid is closed?
That suggests the lid switch is not reporting properly, perhaps because of dirt, a misaligned lid or the switch itself. We would test the switch and its wiring and quote before any part.
Still unsure about Lid?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
