What Lid Lock Flashing means
A flashing Lid Lock light on a Whirlpool top-load HE washer, the Cabrio and WTW family, means one of three things: the lock has not moved into the locked position, the lock motor cannot be powered, or the lid is not completely closed because something interferes. Some models lock immediately and others only after the wash starts, so check your owner's manual for yours. You might also need to press and hold Start for up to three seconds to begin the cycle.
Common causes of Lid Lock Flashing
- Start button not held long enough
- Lock striker on the lid misaligned or obstructed
- Detergent or lint buildup at or near the lock
- Lock motor or its power supply
1. Press and hold Start for up to three seconds. 2. Look at the lock striker on the lid, the piece that fits inside the lock, for anything in the way. 3. Wipe detergent and lint from around the lock with the washer unplugged. 4. Close the lid firmly and try again. If the light keeps flashing, schedule service.
- If the striker is clear and the area is clean, the lock motor or its power feed is the next question.
- We test the lock in operation rather than replacing it on suspicion.
- You get the price in writing first, and finished work has a 30-day workmanship warranty.

Where is the lock striker?
It is the small piece on the lid that slides into the lock. Its position varies by model, so check the lid underside near the front or side. Make sure nothing blocks it.
Why might I need to hold Start for three seconds?
The control wants a deliberate press before it engages the cycle and locks the lid. A quick tap may not be enough on some models, especially when the keypad is a bit worn.
When does the lid lock on my washer?
Some models lock the moment you press Start, others wait until the wash is underway. If your washer locks later, a flashing light before that point may be normal. Your owner's manual says which type you have.
