What F22 means

F22 on Whirlpool front-load washers, the Duet and WFW series such as the WFW5620HW and WFW90HEFW, is an older-generation code for a door lock issue. The door must be completely shut for the washer to run. A shipping item or clothing in the latch, detergent or softener residue around the lock, or an overfull drum that keeps the door from closing can all cause F22. These older Duets are still in many homes, and we repair them.

Common causes of F22

  • Clothing or shipping material caught in the door latch
  • Detergent or softener build-up around the lock
  • A load so large that the door cannot close fully
  • The lock mechanism, which we test after the door area is clear
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Open the door and check that no clothing sticks out past the opening. 2. Remove anything blocking the latch, including packing material. 3. Wipe the lock area with a soft, damp cloth. 4. If the drum is packed, take out part of the load, then close the door firmly and restart.

! Why to stop there
  • If the door closes cleanly and F22 stays, the lock or its signal needs a test.
  • We check how the latch engages and releases.
  • The price is quoted in writing, and we say plainly if an older Duet is not worth the repair.
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
F22F22 questions
Why would a full washer cause F22?

Clothes can press against the door and keep it from latching. Leave room for the load to tumble freely and check the door opening before you close it.

Can I clean the door lock?

Yes, gently, with a soft damp cloth and the washer unplugged. Detergent and softener residue can build up around it and stop the latch from sensing.

When do I call you about F22?

When the door is clear and the load is small but F22 stays. We test the lock and give a written price before any repair.
