What E3 means
On older Whirlpool stacked laundry centers, E3 is an unbalanced alarm from the washer section. The drum is out of balance, which most often happens during the spin portion of the cycle, because the load is packed too tight or the clothes sit unevenly. The washer pauses and shows E3 rather than spinning at full speed. Laundry centers of this age are still around in many homes. We work on them, and we will say so if fixing one is not worth it.
Common causes of E3
- A load that is too large or tightly packed
- Heavy items bunched on one side of the wash plate
- A washer that is not level or has shifted on the floor
- Worn suspension, which we check if it keeps coming back with small loads
1. Stop the spin cycle. 2. Remove several items so the tub is not packed. 3. Rearrange the load evenly around the wash plate. 4. Restart the spin cycle. 5. If E3 returns with a small mixed load, check that the machine sits level and does not rock.
- If E3 repeats with a small, even load, the suspension or leveling is in question.
- We check how the drum moves before anything is replaced.
- We tell you what repair costs against the laundry center's age, in writing, before we start.

Is E3 a breakdown?
Usually not. It is the washer protecting itself from an uneven load before the drum can shake itself or the cabinet. Redistributing the clothes and restarting the spin is the normal answer.
Why does it happen with towels or blankets?
Heavy, absorbent items bunch together on one side and pull the drum off center. Washing them with a few lighter items, or in smaller amounts, helps the spin stay steady.
When do I call you?
When E3 keeps showing on small, even loads or the unit shakes hard against the wall. We inspect the leveling and the suspension, explain what we find, and quote the repair first.
Still unsure about E3?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
