What FdL or F29 means
FdL and F29 are two displays for the same condition on certain older Whirlpool washers: the door cannot unlock. No series is tied to this code, so we describe it by behavior. The washer finishes or stops, but the door stays latched. Common reasons are water still sitting in the drum, a hot cycle that has not cooled enough, or a drain pump filter that needs cleaning. Until the door releases, you cannot reach the load inside.
Common causes of FdL or F29
- Water still in the drum keeping the door lock engaged
- Hot cycle not yet cooled down
- Drain pump filter or drain path restricting the pump-out
- Door lock mechanism that is not releasing
1. Press firmly on the door near the lock, then hold the Power button for at least three seconds. 2. After a Hot cycle, wait for cool-down, then hold Power again for three seconds. 3. Clean the drain pump filter as the owner's manual describes. 4. If the door still does not open, use the manual's emergency door-open steps or schedule service.
- We cannot tell from outside whether trapped water, the pump or the lock itself is holding the door.
- This code appears on older washers that are still in many homes. We repair them, and we tell you plainly if a repair no longer makes sense.
- We check the drain path first, then the lock, and quote in writing before replacing anything.

Why won't the washer door open?
Most often there is still water in the drum, the water is too hot, or the drain pump filter is clogged. The lock stays engaged until those conditions clear. A held Power press can also release it.
Is FdL the same as F29?
Yes, the two displays describe the same condition, a door that cannot unlock. Which one you see depends on the model's display. The checks and the repair path are the same for both.
Can I force the door open?
Please do not pull hard on it. The manual describes an emergency release for this situation. Forcing the latch can break it, and standing water may spill. Call us if the release steps do not work.
