What F8E3 means
F8E3 is an overflow alert. On a Whirlpool front-load Duet or WFW washer, it means too much water or foam in the washer, and the cause often traces to detergent. A laundry tower reports an overflow condition or suds detection, and a compact ventless tower reports machine overflow. The all-in-one WFC8090GX points to an internal overflow from the water inlet valve and asks you to check the drain hose and drain pump filter. An older top-load (Cabrio or WTW) offers only a power reset.
Common causes of F8E3
- Too much detergent or non-HE detergent creating suds
- Thick no-splash bleach adding foam
- Plugged drain hose or drain pump filter on an all-in-one
- Water inlet valve leaking through
1. Use only HE detergent and measure it; soft water may need less. 2. Skip no-splash or easy-pour bleach, which can add suds. 3. On an all-in-one, check that the drain hose and drain pump filter are not plugged. 4. Run a clean wash cycle with no clothes. 5. Unplug for 5 minutes, then restore power. If F8E3 returns, schedule service.
- Fixing the detergent does not tell us whether the inlet valve is letting water through.
- We check drain flow and the level reading.
- On older washers we say plainly when repair is not worth it.

Can the wrong detergent cause F8E3?
Yes. Non-HE detergent or too much of it makes excess suds, which can look like overflow to the washer. Use measured HE detergent and consider less in very soft water.
What is an internal overflow from the water inlet valve?
On the all-in-one WFC8090GX the code suggests water may be getting past the inlet valve. We check the drain hose and pump filter first, then the valve.
Should I keep running the washer after F8E3?
Stop, power it down, and look for water on the floor. After a flood, keep it unplugged until inspected. If it was only suds, a clean cycle and a reset may help.
