What Err means
Err is a message on Whirlpool front-load washers, the Duet and WFW series such as the WFW5620HW and WFW9150WW, both current and older generations. It shows in two situations: you tried to change or modify the cycle while the washer was running, or you tried to start a cycle with the door open. It is a prompt about what was pressed, not a failed part. The washer simply ignores the request and displays Err.
Common causes of Err
- A cycle setting changed after the washer started
- The door not fully closed when Start was pressed
- A door latch that is not registering closed, which we check if Err stays
1. Close the door firmly, then press Start again. 2. Do not change the cycle once it is running; pause or cancel first. 3. To reset the control, unplug the washer for 5 minutes, then plug it back in. 4. Choose the cycle again and start.
- If Err shows with the door shut and no setting change, the door switch or control input needs a test.
- We check that the latch closes squarely and the door sensing reads correctly.
- We quote in writing before any work.

Does Err mean my washer is broken?
Usually no. It means a button press was not accepted, either because you changed the cycle while it was already running or because the door was open when you pressed Start.
How long should I unplug it?
Five minutes. Unplug it from the outlet, let it sit, plug it back in, and then select the cycle again from the beginning and press Start with the door closed.
What if Err keeps coming back?
Then the door sensing may not be reading closed even when it looks shut. We test the latch and switch, find where the signal is lost, and give you a written price before repairing.
Still unsure about Err?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
