What dU means
This is the dU message on Whirlpool top-load HE washers, the Cabrio and WTW family such as the WTW5000DW and WTW7500GC, including older models with flashing-light or display codes. The control reports that the lid cannot unlock because it senses something resting on top of the washer. You see dU on the display, the lid stays locked, and the cycle may not move on. Plenty of these older washers are still in daily use. We repair them, and when a fix would not be worth the money we tell you that straight.
Common causes of dU
- Laundry basket, detergent bottle or other items sitting on the lid
- The lid lock area packed with soap residue or lint
- The lid lock or its wiring not releasing, which we check after the lid is clear
1. Take everything off the top of the washer, including a laundry basket, bottles and folded clothes. 2. Wipe the lid and the area around the lock with a dry cloth. 3. Wait until the cycle has ended or paused, then see whether the lid releases. 4. Do not pry the lid up against the lock.
- If the lid is clear and still will not release, the lock itself or its signal is in question and we test that.
- We confirm the lid sensing before anything is replaced.
- On an older unit we tell you the repair cost against the washer's age before work starts.
Other Washer codes
What does dU mean on my Whirlpool washer?
It means the washer senses an object on the lid and will not unlock it. Clearing the top of the machine is the first step, because the lock is held until that weight is gone.
Can I force the lid open?
We advise against it. Pulling on a locked lid can bend the latch or break the lock. If clearing the top does not release it, we can open it safely and inspect the lock.
Is an older Cabrio worth repairing?
Often yes, since a lid lock is a modest repair. We give you a written price first and say plainly if the washer's condition makes repair a poor choice.
Still unsure about dU?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
