What Clean Filter means
Clean Filter is a red symbol on some Whirlpool washers, in guidance that does not name a series. It means waste water is not being pumped out. The washer lists four reasons: a kink in the drain hose, a drain hose that is blocked or frozen, a blocked filter, or a blocked pump. In plain terms, water is staying in the tub because the drain path is restricted somewhere, and the red symbol points you to the drain pump filter first.
Common causes of Clean Filter
- Kinked drain hose
- Blocked or frozen drain hose
- Drain pump filter blocked with lint or debris
- Drain pump blocked
1. Check the drain hose for kinks. 2. Make sure the washer sits in a room that stays at least 41 degrees F. 3. Clean the drain pump filter as your owner's manual describes, with towels ready for the residual water. 4. Touch Start/Pause once the problem is fixed. 5. If the symbol stays, touch and hold Power for at least three seconds.
- A clean filter and straight hose leave the pump itself as the next suspect
- We test the pump and its circuit on site, with the water drained first
- You get the price in writing, and our repairs carry a 30-day workmanship warranty

Why is the washer not draining?
The red symbol means waste water is not pumped out. A kinked, blocked or frozen hose, a blocked filter and a blocked pump are the reasons listed, so the filter and hose are the first things to check.
Is it safe to open the drain pump filter?
Follow your owner's manual for that step. Expect residual water, so lay towels and a shallow pan down first. If you are not comfortable with it, leave it for us.
What does holding Power for three seconds do?
The guidance asks you to touch and hold Power for at least three seconds if the problem persists after you touch Start/Pause. If it still shows, the drain system needs testing.
