What F20 means
F20 on Whirlpool front-load washers, the Duet and WFW series such as the WFW5620HW and WFW9150WW, is an older-generation code for a water inlet problem. The washer is getting no water or not enough, so the fill stops and F20 shows. The usual suspects are closed faucets, clogged inlet screens and kinked hoses. These older Duets are still in many homes. We repair them, and we say plainly when a repair is not worth it.
Common causes of F20
- Hot or cold water faucets not fully open
- Clogged screens at the hose connections
- Kinked or crushed inlet hoses
- The inlet valves or control, which we test after the supply checks
1. Check that both the hot and cold faucets are turned fully on. 2. Look at the inlet hoses behind the washer for kinks and straighten them. 3. With the water off, check the inlet screens for debris. 4. Reset by unplugging for 5 minutes, then plug in and restart.
- If water reaches the hoses and F20 returns, the inlet valves or the fill sensing need a test.
- We check flow and pressure at the washer.

What does F20 mean on a Duet?
The washer is not getting enough water to fill, so it stops and shows F20. Closed faucets, clogged screens and kinked hoses are the first things we check on a visit.
Do I need both faucets on?
Yes. The washer expects both a hot and a cold supply, and a half-closed valve or a faucet turned only partway can look like no water at all to the control.
Is an old Duet worth repairing?
Often. Inlet repairs are modest compared with a new washer. We quote in writing and say plainly if the machine's age means you are better off not repairing.
Still seeing F20?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
