What CL means
CL on a Whirlpool front-load washer, the Duet and WFW style such as the WFW5620HW, WFW9150WW or WFW90HEFW, in both current and older generations, is a reminder and not an error. The washer shows it after 30 cycles to tell you it is time to run the Clean Washer cycle. The code clears by itself once a clean cycle has been completed, or after three more cycles if you do not run one. Nothing is wrong with the washer when CL appears.
Common causes of CL
- Thirty cycles reached since the last clean cycle
- Clean Washer cycle never run on this machine
- Odor or residue building up in the tub and seal area
- Washer working normally and only reminding you
1. Run the Clean Washer cycle with a washer cleaner made for front-load machines, following its label. 2. Leave the door slightly open afterward so the drum can dry. 3. Wipe the door seal and the dispenser area. 4. Let the code clear on its own once the cycle finishes. 5. If CL stays, note how many cycles have run since.
- A reminder code needs no repair, but a clean cycle that cannot finish does
- If the washer stalls, drains slowly or leaves a smell after cleaning, we test it
- Anything we repair is quoted in writing first and covered for 30 days on workmanship

Is CL a problem with my washer?
No. It is a maintenance reminder that appears after 30 cycles. Running the Clean Washer cycle clears it, and it will also clear by itself after three more cycles.
Do I have to run the clean cycle?
It is recommended, because it helps keep odors and residue away from the tub, drain and hoses. If you skip it, CL goes away on its own after three cycles and returns after another 30.
What if my washer smells even after cleaning?
Then we look at the drain, the seal and the pump for trapped residue. We quote in writing before work, and older front-load washers get an honest opinion on whether repair makes sense.
Still unsure about CL?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
