What E1 means
E1 on Whirlpool electric and gas dryers in the WED and WGD series, Cabrio and Duet generations included, such as the WED8500DC, comes with a reset routine and no named cause from the brand. Note that on the older stacked laundry center, the same characters appear on the washer side as a water inlet alarm. That is a separate matter. On the dryer, you see E1 and the cycle may not run, and we find the cause by testing.
Common causes of E1
- Control board and its connections
- Wiring between the control and the dryer's parts
- A brief electronic error cleared by power-down
- Sensor input read by the control
1. Turn off the dryer's circuit breaker or breakers for 5 minutes. 2. Turn them on again. 3. Start a timed dry cycle. 4. Watch the dryer for one minute, to see whether E1 shows again. 5. If E1 returns, stop using the dryer and call us.
- The reset does not name a cause, so a repeating E1 has to be found by testing
- We cannot tell from the display if the control or a connection is the weak spot
- We test in order and give a written price before replacing any part

Does E1 on a dryer mean a water problem?

What is the reset for E1?
Turn the dryer's breaker or breakers off for 5 minutes, switch them on, start a timed dry cycle, and watch for one minute to see if E1 stays away.
