What PF means

PF stands for power failure. On Whirlpool WED / WGD electric and gas dryers, Cabrio and Duet included, and on HybridCare heat-pump dryers, it means a power failure interrupted the drying cycle. On WED / WGD dryers a noisy supply during an outage, or pressing keys in the first 10 seconds after power returns, can also bring it up. The dryer is usually fine. Touch and hold START to restart the cycle, or press POWER to clear the display.

Common causes of PF

  • Recent outage or brownout
  • Keys pressed right after power returned
  • Noisy supply read as a wrong voltage
  • Loose cord or outlet connection

1. Hold START to resume the interrupted cycle, or tap POWER to wipe the message. 2. If an outage just happened, turn the dryer's breaker off for one minute and back on. 3. Wait about a minute with the dryer and check that PF does not return. 4. Confirm normal operation with a timed dry cycle.

Is PF a sign my dryer is broken?

Usually not. It reports that power was interrupted. Restart the cycle, and if it runs normally the dryer is fine. A PF without any outage is worth a closer look.

Why did PF appear after pressing buttons?

On WED / WGD dryers, keys pressed before the 10-second delay after power-up can cause it. Wait about ten seconds after power returns before touching the panel.

PF keeps coming back, what should I do?

Check that the cord is seated and see whether a breaker is loose or warm. If PF repeats without outages, book a visit so we can look at the supply and the control.
