What hE means
The hE code on Whirlpool WED / WGD electric and gas dryers, Cabrio and Duet included, usually describes a heating error, and the temperature could be too low or too high. On a vented, non-heat-pump model, the likely cause is a clogged lint screen or a blocked or restricted vent leading outside the home. Airflow matters a lot for this code. Owners commonly notice long dry times, hot laundry that is still damp, or a dryer that stops with hE on the display.
Common causes of hE
- Lint screen and vent run blocked or restricted
- Outside exhaust hood clogged
- Temperature sensing and the heat circuit
- Control response once airflow is restored
1. Clean the lint screen. 2. Check the vent from the dryer to the wall for crushes, kinks and lint. 3. Make sure the outside exhaust hood is clear and its flap opens freely. 4. Allow ample airflow around the dryer. 5. Run a timed dry cycle, and if hE returns, schedule service.
- A blocked vent and a failing heat circuit give the same display, so we check airflow first
- We then test sensing and the heat circuit
- A written price comes first, and an older dryer gets an honest note about repair value
Other Dryer codes
Why would a dirty vent cause a heating error?
If hot air cannot leave, temperatures climb, and the control sees them as too high. If air cannot flow properly, it can also see readings as too low. Either way it flags hE.
How do I know if my vent is the problem?
If dry times have grown long and the dryer shell feels hot, suspect the vent. Look for kinks and lint in the run and at the outside hood. We can inspect the whole run.
Does hE affect heat pump models?
The vent advice applies to vented models. Heat pump dryers are handled differently, so if yours is one, tell us the model and we will check the matching circuit.
