What Fod or F18 means
Fod and F18 are two displays for the same condition on Whirlpool washers: excessive foam, or suds, interrupted the program. No series is tied to this code. The washer pauses, tries to settle the foam, and may stop and restart several times until the suds fall. Too much detergent or the wrong kind is the usual driver, along with a drain pump filter that has not been cleaned. The load is often left soapy and wet when the cycle ends.
Common causes of Fod or F18
- Detergent dose too high for the load size and soil level
- Detergent that is not HE type in an HE washer
- Drain pump filter clogged and slowing the foam removal
- Drain path restricting flow
1. Run a Rinse & Spin cycle with the Intensive Rinse option. 2. Clean the drain pump filter as the owner's manual shows. 3. Use only HE detergent, and follow the detergent maker's dosing guidance, using the Dosing Aid option if your model has it. 4. If Fod or F18 keeps returning with a small dose, schedule service.
- If foam appears again with a correct dose and a clean filter, we cannot tell whether the drain or a sensor is misreading.
- We check the drain path and the pump, then look at the detergent habits with you.
- Our price is given in writing before any repair.

What is the difference between Fod and F18?
None in meaning. Both tell you that excess foam interrupted the cycle. Which one shows depends on your washer's display. The detergent and drain checks are the same either way.
How much detergent is right?
Follow the dosing instructions printed by the detergent maker, based on load size and soil level. Concentrated HE detergents need far less than older formulas, and more soap rarely cleans better.
Can suds damage the washer?
Heavy suds can cause poor rinsing, longer cycles and drainage trouble, and in bad cases leaks. Running the extra rinse and cleaning the filter gets ahead of that. Call us if the foam keeps returning.
