What Fill or Sensing Light On means
On an older Whirlpool top-load HE washer, the Cabrio and WTW family, the Sensing/Fill light is often normal. When you press Start with the Water Level knob on Auto Sensing, the washer fills a little, senses load size and balance, then fills to the proper level and begins the wash. The light is on throughout. It becomes a concern only if the light stays on and little or no water comes in, which points to the water supply lines. An open lid pauses sensing and washing.
Common causes of Fill or Sensing Light On
- Both water supply lines not fully open
- Lid left open, pausing the sensing and wash stages
- Inlet hoses or screens limiting the flow
- Water level sensing circuit, once supply and lid are confirmed
1. Close the lid and leave the washer alone for a few minutes; sensing takes time. 2. Confirm the hot and cold faucets are fully open. 3. If very little water comes in, check that neither hose is kinked. 4. Note that a lid open more than 10 minutes cancels the cycle and pumps out the water. Restart if that happens.
- If the light stays on with a dry tub and open faucets, we cannot yet tell whether the cause sits in a valve, a hose screen or the level sensing.
- This is an older top-load design still found in many laundry rooms. We repair it, and we do not push a repair that is not worth it.
- We test the fill path and the sensing circuit and quote before work.

Is the Sensing/Fill light an error?
Not by itself. It is lit while the washer fills and senses the load, and it is a normal part of Auto Sensing. It is only a sign of trouble when no water arrives or the cycle never moves on.
How long should sensing take?
Sensing is a few minutes of partial fill and checking, and it can restart if you open the lid. Avoid opening the lid during sensing, since the process begins over after the lid is closed.
What if little water comes in?
Check that both faucets are fully open and the hoses are straight. If a narrow trickle remains, the hose screens or inlet valve may be restricted, and we can test the fill path for you.
