What F9E1 means
F9E1 means the washer is not draining in a timely manner, or not at all, and the meaning fits several Whirlpool platforms. On front-load Duet and WFW washers, the drain hose, drain pump filter or door seal bellows may be clogged. On top-load HE washers, including the older Cabrio and flashing-light models, the code is Long Drain, often from a hose pushed too far into the standpipe. An all-in-one washer-dryer, a compact ventless tower and a standard laundry tower washer section also report it, with a blocked drain pump named on the tower.
Common causes of F9E1
- Clogged drain pump or its filter
- Drain hose kinked, blocked or installed too deep in the standpipe
- Bellows drain holes or door seal buildup on front-load and washer-dryer models
- Drain pump motor or control circuit, after the path is clear
1. Switch the washer off and let any hot water cool before touching the filter. 2. Clean the drain pump filter as the owner's manual shows, with a towel and shallow pan ready. 3. Make sure the drain hose is not kinked and enters the standpipe no more than 4.5 inches. 4. Run a drain-only cycle. If F9E1 returns, schedule service.
- After the filter and hose are clear, we cannot tell from outside whether the pump itself is weak.
- Older Cabrio and Duet washers are still in many homes; we repair them, and we say plainly when a repair is not worth it.
- We test drain flow and the pump circuit before quoting anything.

Why does a hose too deep in the standpipe cause F9E1?
If the hose reaches too far into the drainpipe, water can siphon back into the tub or drain too slowly. The manufacturer limit is 4.5 inches, and the hose form should be left as shipped.
Where is the drain pump filter?
On most front-load washers it sits behind a small panel at the lower front corner. Your owner's manual shows the exact spot. Expect some water to come out, so use a shallow pan and towels.
Is it safe to run the washer with water standing in the tub?
Do not start new loads. Leave the washer unplugged if the water is deep, scoop or drain it with the filter, and call us if the pump hums but nothing moves.
