What F 22 means
You may see F 22 on the washer half of a stacked Whirlpool laundry center from the older generation that prints error codes on some models. The code tells the owner only one thing to do, which is to remove power and let the control start over. It does not name a sensor, a valve or any other part, so the display alone cannot tell us what stopped the cycle. The washer stops and F 22 stays on. These laundry centers are still running in plenty of homes, and our technicians keep working on them.
Common causes of F 22
- A control that stopped mid-cycle and clears when power is removed
- A condition that comes back after the reset, which points us to the control board and its harness
- A loose cord or a weak outlet feeding the unit
1. Pull the washer plug from the outlet and leave it out for at least 2 minutes, up to 5. 2. Check that the cord and plug are undamaged, then plug in again. 3. Close the lid or door, select a short cycle and start it. 4. If F 22 appears again, leave the machine and book a visit instead of cycling it repeatedly.
- A reset only clears a stalled control; it does not tell us which circuit raised F 22.
- If the code returns, we open the machine and trace it from the control outward.
- You get the price in writing before we touch anything, and an honest word if the laundry center is past worth repairing.
Other Washer codes
Is F 22 serious?
Not by itself. It is a general code with a power reset as the only owner step. If it comes back after a clean restart, it is worth having the control checked.
How long should the washer stay unplugged?
Between 2 and 5 minutes is enough for the control to reset. Longer does no harm, but it will not change the result if the underlying condition is still there.
Can the dryer on top keep running?
The two sections may share a cabinet and power cord, so test the dryer after the restart. If only the washer shows a code, tell us when you call.
