What EL means

EL appears on the washer section of an older Whirlpool stacked laundry center when the door or lid latch is not locking the way the control expects. Something may be blocking the latch, such as packing or shipping material, a clothing item, or soap build-up around the lock. You see EL on the display and the cycle will not begin or continue. A lot of these older units are still in service. We repair them, and we say so openly when the repair would not pay off.

Common causes of EL

  • Packing or shipping material, or clothing, blocking the latch
  • Soap build-up around the door area and lock
  • A lock mechanism that does not engage, which we test after the area is clean

1. Make sure nothing is blocking the door latch, such as packing material or a clothing item. 2. Clean the door area of soap build-up and check the lock mechanism is free. 3. Cycle power: disconnect power for 30 seconds, then plug back in. 4. Close the door and try a cycle again.

What does EL mean on my laundry center?

The washer cannot confirm that the door is latched, so it will not run. A blocked latch, leftover packing or soap build-up around the lock is the first thing to look for.

Is it safe to keep trying the cycle?

A few tries after clearing the latch are fine. If EL returns right away, stop and let us inspect the lock rather than forcing the door, which can bend the latch.

Is this old laundry center worth the repair?

Often a lock repair is modest. We quote first and say plainly if the age of the machine means it is better not to repair.
