What drn means
drn on a Whirlpool top-load HE washer, the Cabrio and WTW style such as the WTW5000DW, WTW5105HW, WTW7500GC or WTW8500DC, is a long drain alert, the same condition the washer can report as F9 E1. It means the washer is taking too long to drain. These are older models still in many Houston homes. The cause is often in the drain installation: a hose pushed more than 4.5 inches into the standpipe, a hose end set too low, or a kinked or clogged hose.
Common causes of drn
- Drain hose pushed more than 4.5 inches into the standpipe
- Drain hose end lower than 36 inches from the floor, letting the washer siphon
- Kinked or clogged drain hose
- Drain hose opening taped over
1. Check how far the drain hose extends into the standpipe; it should not go more than 4.5 inches (114 mm). 2. Fit the drain hose form and fasten the hose to the drainpipe or tub. 3. Leave the drain opening uncovered, with no tape. 4. Make sure the hose end is higher than 36 inches from the floor. 5. Look for kinks or clogs in the hose.
- A correct installation leaves the pump and its circuit as the next suspects
- We test the drain pump and run a drain cycle on site
- A written price comes first, and we say plainly when an older washer is not worth repairing

What is the difference between drn and F9 E1?
They describe the same condition, which is the washer taking too long to drain. Your model shows one or the other, and the drain hose installation is the first thing to check for either.
Why does the hose height matter?
If the hose end is not higher than 36 inches from the floor, the washer can siphon, filling and draining at the same time. That makes it seem as if it will not drain.
Should I tape the hose to the drain?
No. Do not tape over the drain opening, because the guidance says so. Use the drain hose form and secure the hose to the drainpipe or tub in the way the guidance describes.
