What F04 means

A Whirlpool built-in microwave or microwave drawer, such as model WMC50522AS, that shows F04 is reporting a problem that may involve the electronic oven control or the associated wiring. This is an older-style code that follows the same guidance as F03. Typically the oven will not start a cycle, or it stops, and F04 remains in the display until the power is reset. The code names an area to inspect, not a failed part.

Common causes of F04

  • Electronic oven control
  • Wiring harness to the control
  • Connector at the control
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Turn off the circuit breaker that feeds the microwave for one minute. 2. Turn it on again. 3. Watch the display for one minute to see if F04 returns. 4. If it does not, try a brief cycle to check normal operation. 5. If it returns, stop using the oven.

! Why to stop there
  • Because the code covers both the control and its wiring, we check the connections first and then the control.
  • A repeat after a reset tells us the problem is still present and a hands-on test is needed.
  • You get a written price before work, and on an older unit we are honest about whether the repair pays off.
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
F04F04 questions
What does F04 tell me?

That the electronic oven control or its wiring may have a problem. The display does not say which, so a technician has to check the connections and control.

Why did F04 appear suddenly?

Electrical controls can fail without warning, and a power surge or a loose connector can trigger a code. We find the actual cause by testing.

Is it okay to keep restarting the oven?

One reset is fine. If F04 keeps returning, repeated restarts do not help, so call us and we will test the control and wiring. We will also tell you what we find.
