What F9 means

Whirlpool over-the-range microwaves such as WMH31017HS, WMH32519HZ and WMH53521HZ display F9 when the oven could not execute the function. The wording behind it names the appliance control board, the relay control board and the wiring that joins them. At the microwave, a button press leads to nothing and the display shows F9. It marks a pair of circuit boards to examine and does not confirm that either has failed.

Common causes of F9

  • Appliance control board
  • Relay control board
  • Wiring between the two boards
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Turn the microwave's circuit breaker off. 2. Wait a full minute, then turn it back on. 3. Watch the display for sixty seconds in case F9 returns. 4. If it stays clear, repeat the function that did not run earlier and see whether it works now.

! Why to stop there
  • If F9 returns, the reset has not touched the cause, so both boards and the wiring between them need testing.
  • The relay board switches the loads, so we check what it sends and what the control asks for.
  • Boards are costly, which is why we confirm the cause and give you a written price before ordering.
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
F9F9 questions
What is a relay control board?

It is a board that switches the microwave's loads on and off when the main control asks. F9 says the control or the relay board, or their wiring, could not complete the request.

Is F9 the same as F9Q?

No. F9Q is a different code with only a power reset in its guidance. F9 names the control and relay boards, so we test those circuits.

Should I buy a new microwave when F9 appears?

Not before a diagnosis. A wiring or board issue may be repairable, and we tell you honestly when a new unit is the better choice.
