What LOC means
LOC means the Control Lock is switched on. On built-in microwaves and microwave drawers, such as WMC50522AS, it shuts down the panel controls to prevent unintended use, so when you press a key you see Locked, Lock or LOC and hear invalid entry tones. On over-the-range models like WMH31017HS, a padlock or an L can show instead; depending on the model you hold Cancel for three seconds or Start for five. Countertop models such as WMC30516HZ add a two-step door opening, shown by a door icon.
Common causes of LOC
- Control Lock turned on
- Door lock icon showing on a countertop model with the two-step door feature
1. Read the display: Locked, Lock, LOC, an L or a padlock all mean the Control Lock is on. 2. On an over-the-range or countertop model, hold the Cancel key for three seconds, or the Start key for five, depending on the model. 3. On a countertop unit with the door icon lit, press Stop and then Door Release to open the door. 4. If your model works differently, check the owner's manual.
- LOC is a feature and not a failure, so a unit that stays locked after the steps for your model may have a keypad that does not respond.
- We test the keypad if the lock will not release.
- Written price first, and a 30-day workmanship warranty on completed repairs.
Other Microwave codes
Why does my microwave beep and show LOC?
The Control Lock is on, so the keys are disabled on purpose to avoid unintended use. The beeps are the invalid entry tones. Nothing is wrong when you see this. Release it with the method for your model, and check the manual if your keys differ.
How do I turn the lock off?
Depending on the model, hold the Cancel key for three seconds, or the Start key for five. Built-in models point you to the owner's manual for their exact method.
The door will not open. Is that the lock?
On countertop models with the two-step door feature, press Stop and then Door Release. The door icon shows when the lock is active. Check your manual for details.
Still unsure about LOC?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
