What Bottom Filter Issues means

Some Whirlpool electric and gas dryers in the WED and WGD series, Cabrio and Duet generations included, show a bottom filter symbol on the display. It appears for two reasons: the bottom filter is blocked by lint, or it is not positioned correctly in its compartment. Owners notice the symbol and, often, longer drying times. This is a maintenance indicator and not a control failure, so the fix usually takes a few minutes at home.

Common causes of Bottom Filter Issues

  • Bottom filter loaded with lint
  • Filter not pushed fully into its compartment
  • Release levers not in the vertical position
  • Flap not fully closed over the filter
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Take out the bottom filter and clean it, then insert it properly afterward. 2. If it was not seated correctly, push the bottom filter in and move the release levers into a vertical position. 3. Close the flap. 4. Refer to the owner's manual for cleaning the bottom lint filter if you are unsure how it comes out.

! Why to stop there
  • If the symbol stays after a clean filter is seated, the sensing or the compartment needs a look
  • Lint that has built up past the filter can restrict airflow in ways you cannot see
  • We inspect the filter area and airflow, and quote in writing before any repair
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
Bottom Filter IssuesBottom Filter Issues questions
What does the bottom filter symbol mean?

Either the bottom filter is clogged with lint or it is not seated correctly. Cleaning it and pushing it in fully, with the levers vertical, resolves most cases.

Where are the release levers?

They are part of the bottom filter compartment. After inserting the filter, move them into the vertical position, then close the flap. Your owner's manual shows the layout for your model.

The symbol is still on. What next?

If the filter is clean and seated and the symbol remains, the sensing or the compartment may be at issue. We can inspect it and give you a written price.
