What SE means

SE appears on Whirlpool over-the-range microwaves such as WMH31017HS, WMH32519HZ and WMH53521HZ when there is a problem with the keypad, which is the user interface, or with the wiring associated with it. At the microwave you will see SE on the display, and the keypad may not respond properly. The code names the keypad circuit to test and does not by itself show that the keypad has failed.

Common causes of SE

  • Keypad (user interface)
  • Wiring and connector between the keypad and the control
  • Control reading of the keypad
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Switch the microwave's breaker off at the panel and wait a full minute. 2. Switch it on and look at the microwave for one minute to see if SE returns. 3. Wipe the keypad with a dry cloth. 4. If SE stays away, run a normal cycle.

! Why to stop there
  • If SE returns, the keypad or its connection needs testing, because a reset cannot repair a worn keypad.
  • We test the keypad and its connector before judging the control board.
  • You approve a written price first.
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
SESE questions
Does SE mean the keypad is broken?

It points to the keypad circuit, which includes the keypad and its wiring. We test the circuit to see which part is responsible. It is a report about the keypad and its wiring, so the keypad may be fine and a connection may be the real cause.

Can I keep using the microwave with SE?

If a reset clears it and the keys respond, you can. If SE returns or the keys misbehave, stop using it until we test the circuit.

How is SE different from F9Q1?

Both involve the touch pad, but they are separate codes. SE names the keypad and its wiring, while F9Q1 says the oven could not execute a function.
