What F01 means

F01 is an older-style display code on Whirlpool built-in microwaves and microwave drawers, such as model WMC50522AS. It tells you the control found a problem that may involve the oven temperature sensor, the control itself, or the wiring between them. Units that show codes this way are often several years old and still in many Houston homes. You will see F01 in the display, and the oven may not heat or may end a cycle early. The code points to a circuit, not to a part already proven bad.

Common causes of F01

  • Oven temperature sensor
  • Control board
  • Wiring and connectors in the sensor circuit
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Turn the circuit breaker for the microwave off and leave it off for one minute. 2. Turn the breaker back on. 3. Watch the oven for one minute and make sure F01 does not come back. 4. Verify that the oven operates with a short cycle. 5. If F01 returns, stop using the oven until it is checked.

! Why to stop there
  • A reset cannot tell a sensor that reads wrong from a control that misreads it, so we test the sensor circuit and the board input.
  • If F01 is intermittent, a loose connector is a common thing we look for.
  • We explain what we found and quote the price in writing first; on an older unit we say plainly when a repair is not worth it.
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
F01F01 questions
What does F01 mean on my Whirlpool built-in microwave?

It points to the oven temperature sensor circuit: the sensor, the control and the wiring between them. The display does not say which of the three is responsible, so we test the circuit to find out.

Is F01 the same as F02 and F1?

The manufacturer gives F01, F02 and F1 the same guidance on these built-in models, so the display alone does not separate them. We test the same temperature sensor circuit for each.

Can an older built-in microwave with F01 be repaired?

Often yes. We repair older units, give you a written price before work starts, and cover the repair with a 30-day workmanship warranty. If the cost is not justified, we tell you plainly.
