What Lock means
Lock on a Whirlpool freestanding or slide-in range cooktop, such as the WFE525S0HS or WFG515S0ES, means the Control Lock is active. It exists to prevent unintended use of the surface cooking areas. If it was activated while the cooktop power was off, the cooking areas cannot be turned on from the touch controls. If it was activated while the power was on, every keypad is locked out except Power and Off. This is a setting you can undo.
Common causes of Lock
- Control Lock switched on at the cooktop
- Lock key touched by accident while cleaning
- Lock icon staying on after the normal unlock step
1. Touch and hold the Lock key for 3 seconds. 2. Check that the lock indicator goes out. 3. If it stays on, turn the range's circuit breaker off for one minute. 4. Turn the breaker back on. 5. Watch the cooktop for one minute, then try a burner to verify it works.
- When the unlock press and a reset both fail, the touch panel may be reading a key wrongly, which only testing shows
- We would check the cooktop controls and their connections and quote the work in writing first
- The panel stays closed; we never ask you to remove it

How do I turn off Lock on my cooktop?
Touch and hold the Lock key for 3 seconds. The lock indicator should go out, and the surface controls respond again. The Owner's Manual shows the same step for your model.
Why can't I turn on a burner?
If Control Lock was set while the cooktop was off, the burners cannot be started from the touch controls until it is unlocked. Unlock first, then try again. This is not a failed burner.
Will you fix an older cooktop that stays locked?
Yes. Older Whirlpool ranges remain in many Houston homes. We provide a written price first and a 30-day workmanship warranty, and we tell you honestly if the repair is not worthwhile.
Still unsure about Lock?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
