What uL means
uL on an older Whirlpool top-load HE washer, the Cabrio and WTW family, reports the same unbalanced load condition as OFb. The washer could not correct the imbalance through its automated methods and now needs manual help to redistribute the load around the wash plate. If the display is flashing and the washer has stopped, wait for the lid to unlock, even out the load, close the lid and press Start/Pause. You may feel vibration during spin, or see all the dial lights flashing.
Common causes of uL
- Load clumped to one side of the wash plate
- Wet items or extra water added to a load already running
- Single item such as a rug or jacket washed alone
- Balance sensing, if a well-spread load still stops the washer
1. Wait for the lid to unlock, then open it. 2. Spread the clothes in loose heaps around the wash plate. 3. Close the lid and press Start/Pause to resume. 4. Next time, pair a single bulky piece with a few towels.
- If an even load still brings up uL, the suspension or balance sensing needs a proper look.
- This older washer is still working in a great many homes. We repair it, and we are straightforward if a repair would not be worthwhile.
- We test with a balanced test load and quote in writing first.

Why shouldn't I add wet items to a running load?
Adding wet items or extra water mid-cycle can upset the balance. Even a small change can shift the weight to one side and bring the washer to a stop with uL.
Does uL mean the same as OFb?
Yes, in practice. Both show that the load is unbalanced and needs to be redistributed by hand. Which one you see depends on the display.
What should I do when the dial lights are all flashing?
Wait for the lid to unlock, rebalance the load and press Start/Pause. If the lights flash again with an even load, the washer may be unlevel or have a balance issue we can test.
Still seeing uL?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
