What LdL means

LdL appears on an older Whirlpool top-load HE washer, the Cabrio and WTW family, when the lid lock will not lock or has failed to engage. The washer will not begin or continue a cycle without a locked lid. Something in the load or under the lid may be blocking it, and detergent buildup around the lock mechanism can also stop it from engaging. You will see LdL, hear no solid click from the lid, and the cycle stays on hold.

Common causes of LdL

  • Clothing or an item caught directly under the lid
  • Detergent or lint buildup around the lid lock mechanism
  • Lock striker alignment on the lid
  • Lid lock mechanism or its circuit, if the lid closes cleanly
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Open the lid and look for socks, straps or fabric sitting where the lid closes. 2. Wipe detergent residue and lint from around the lid lock area with a damp cloth. 3. Close the lid firmly and start a short cycle. 4. If LdL appears again, schedule service.

! Why to stop there
  • A clear lid and a clean lock that still will not engage leave the lock mechanism or its wiring in question.
  • This is an older top-load design that many homes still use. We repair it, and we are honest when the cost would outweigh the washer's remaining life.
  • We test the lock in operation and give the price in writing first.
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
LdLLdL questions
What does LdL stand for?

It stands for lid lock failure to lock. The control commands the lock and does not get confirmation that the lid is held shut, so it refuses to run the cycle.

Can sticky detergent really stop the lock?

Yes. Dried detergent and lint build up around the lock mechanism and can keep it from moving fully. A damp cloth around the lock area is a safe first step, with the washer unplugged.

Is it safe to bypass the lid lock?

No. The lock protects you from a spinning basket. Never tape or jam it. If cleaning does not help, we test the lock and tell you what a repair costs before we start.
