What FCodes means
FCodes is our shorthand for any display where the letter F flashes, followed by a pair of characters, on Whirlpool French-door bottom-freezer refrigerators such as the WRF535SMHZ and WRX735SDHZ, and on side-by-side refrigerators with an in-door dispenser such as the WRS325SDHZ, WRS571CIHZ and WRS588FIHZ. For both styles the brand gives the same instruction: reset the power, keep the cooling function on, observe the display, and schedule service if the F returns. It names no single part, so what lies behind each F code is decided by testing.
Common causes of FCodes
- Control board flagging a circuit it could not verify
- Sensor, fan or defrost wiring with a loose connector
- Cooling function turned off at the panel
- Power loss or surge leaving the board stuck on the code
1. Take the refrigerator off power, at the breaker or the plug, for one minute. 2. Restore the power. 3. Confirm at the panel that cooling is on. 4. Look at the display for a minute to see whether the F flashes again. 5. If it does, write down the full code, the time, and how cold each compartment feels.
- The reset cannot identify which circuit raised the flashing F
- The full code, not just the F, tells us where to begin, so write down every character you see
- On site we test the circuits, and the written price reaches you before any work; if an older unit is past saving, we say that too

What does a flashing F mean on a Whirlpool refrigerator?
It means the control has flagged something, and the brand's answer is to reset the power with cooling on and arrange service if it persists. The characters after the F point to a circuit, which we confirm by testing.
Does the style of refrigerator change the steps?
No. Side-by-side models with a dispenser and French-door models are told to do the same thing: a one-minute power cycle, cooling on, and a minute of watching. The testing afterward differs by model.
Will you repair a refrigerator that is out of warranty?
Yes. Many of these side-by-side and French-door models have been in kitchens for years. Our price is in writing before we start, a 30-day workmanship warranty covers the repair, and we tell you candidly when it is not worth doing.
Still seeing FCodes?
