What F1-5 means

On an older generation of Whirlpool freestanding and slide-in ranges (the WFG525S0HV family is an example), F1-5 turns up when the oven control or its keypad reports a problem. The only published step is a breaker reset, and the places it names are the oven control, the user interface or keypad, and the wiring. That makes it a message about the controls you touch, rather than the temperature sensor. Many of these ranges are still in service, and we repair them.

Common causes of F1-5

  • Oven control
  • Keypad or user interface
  • Wiring between keypad and control
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Switch off the range's breaker and wait for one full minute. 2. Turn the breaker back on. 3. Press nothing and watch the display for one minute. 4. If F1-5 stays away, test the keypad with a short bake. 5. If it returns, stop using the oven.

! Why to stop there
  • A keypad with worn contacts can mimic a control failure, so we test the keypad separately
  • We look at the wiring first because it is the simplest cause to correct
  • On an older range, we tell you plainly if repair costs make no sense
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
F1-5F1-5 questions
Could a sticky keypad cause F1-5?

The guidance names the keypad as a possible area. Pads that stick or wear can send wrong signals. We test the keypad as well as the control.

Do I need to replace the whole control?

Not until testing proves it. The wiring or the keypad may be the problem, and those are usually quicker, cheaper repairs than a new control, so we always check them first.

Why watch the display without pressing anything?

Watching for one minute shows whether the code comes back by itself, which helps separate a one-time glitch from a lasting problem. Pressing keys during that minute could confuse what you are seeing.
