What ES or E5 means

On some Whirlpool freestanding and slide-in ranges, among them the WFE515S0ES and WFG525S0HV, the letters ES followed by On mean the Energy Save feature is active. The control and clock go into a sleep mode that darkens the display when the range sits idle with only the time of day showing. After about five minutes of idle time the display shows ES and On twice, then goes blank. Pressing a control key such as Bake or Broil, or opening the oven door, wakes it up.

Common causes of ES or E5

  • Energy Save feature turned on from the clock key
  • Display waking only on a key press or door opening, which is normal
  • Keypad not waking the display
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Press a control key such as Bake or Broil, or open the oven door, to wake the display. 2. To keep the display lit, look up Energy Save in the owner's manual for your model. 3. Energy Save is entered by holding the clock key for ten seconds, which makes the control beep, so a long press may have started it. 4. If the display stays blank after a key press, turn the breaker off for one minute and back on.

! Why to stop there
  • If the display never wakes, the keypad or control may be the cause and needs testing
  • We confirm that the range is not simply asleep before looking for a part
  • The price is quoted before work
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
ES or E5ES or E5 questions
Why does my range display go dark?

With Energy Save on, the display sleeps after about five minutes of idling with only the time shown. This saves power and is not a problem. A key press or opening the door wakes it.

Are ES and E5 one message?

Both are listed together in the guidance for this display, and the ES wording is the one that explains Energy Save. If you see something else, tell us exactly what the display shows.

How do I turn it off?

Your owner's manual for the model gives the keys. We do not guess at them. If the steps do not work or the display stays dark, we can check the keypad and control.
