What Displaying an H means
An H in the heat setting window of a Whirlpool freestanding or slide-in range tells you a surface cooking area is still too hot to touch, even after the burner or element has been turned off. It is a hot-surface reminder, not an error, and it appears on gas and electric models such as the WFE525S0HS and WFG515S0ES. It goes away on its own once the cooktop cools. If it keeps showing or flashes after the cooktop has cooled, a power reset is the next step.
Common causes of Displaying an H
- Surface still hot after cooking, which is normal
- Cooktop sensor reading high after it has cooled
- Control holding the indicator after the surface has cooled
1. Leave the cooktop alone until it has cooled completely. 2. If the H is still showing or flashing, switch the range off at its breaker for one minute. 3. Switch the breaker on again. 4. Verify that the cooktop works. 5. Keep children and pets away from the cooktop while the H is lit.
- An H that never goes out on a cold cooktop points to a sensing or control problem we have to test
- We check the cooktop sensing and the control before suggesting a part
- You see the price in writing before any repair

How long does the H stay on after cooking?
It stays on while any surface cooking area remains too hot to touch. The time depends on what you cooked and how long, so wait for the cooktop to cool fully before judging it.
Does the H mean something is wrong?
Not by itself. It is a safety reminder that the surface is hot. Only when it stays on or flashes long after the cooktop is cool does it call for a power reset.
What if the H comes back after the reset?
Then the range may be misreading cooktop temperature. Stop relying on the indicator, treat the surface as hot, and book a visit so we can test the sensing and control.
