What E61 means
On Whirlpool over-the-range microwaves, such as model WMH31017HS, WMH32519HZ or WMH53521HZ, E61 means the oven sensor circuit reported an open condition to the control board. The control cannot complete the loop that reads the sensor, as if a wire had come loose. The sensor, the appliance control board or the wiring may be responsible. You will see E61 in the display and the oven may not start a cycle or may end one early.
Common causes of E61
- Oven sensor
- Open wiring or loose connector
- Appliance control board
1. Switch off the circuit breaker for the microwave and leave it off for one minute. 2. Switch it on again. 3. Keep an eye on the microwave for one minute to confirm E61 does not return. 4. Heat a cup of water briefly to confirm the oven still works. 5. If the code comes back, stop using the oven.
- A loose connector and a failed sensor give the same reading, so we test the circuit to separate them.
- If E61 is intermittent, it usually points to a connection that moves.
- You get the finding and a written price before we begin.
Other Microwave codes
What is the oven sensor on this microwave?
It is a sensor the control reads to manage heating. E61 says the circuit to that sensor looks open, as if a connection were broken, so the control cannot read it.
How do E61 and E62 differ?
E61 is an open sensor circuit and E62 is a shorted one, so the two codes cover opposite conditions in the same area. The two codes cover opposite conditions in the same area.
Will a reset fix it?
Maybe, for a one-time glitch. If E61 comes back, something in the circuit needs repair and we will test it first and give you a written price.
