What F4E3 means
F4E3 means different things by model. On Whirlpool WED / WGD electric and gas dryers, including Cabrio and Duet, it is the restricted airflow code: the lint screen or vent is clogged, crushed, kinked or has too many turns, and the dryer keeps running while the code is shown. On a compact ventless laundry tower it lists a clogged filter. On a laundry tower or stacked laundry center it lists the main heater. On the all-in-one washer-dryer WFC8090GX it points to the dryer blower motor, with washing still working.
Common causes of F4E3
- Lint screen, vent run and outside hood (WED / WGD)
- Filter condition (ventless tower)
- Main heater circuit (laundry tower)
- Dryer blower motor (washer-dryer)
1. Touch any key to clear the code. 2. Clean the lint screen. 3. Check that the vent from the dryer to the wall is not crushed or kinked, and that the vent and the outside hood are free of lint. 4. Pick a timed dry heated cycle and restart. 5. On the washer-dryer or tower, unplug it for five minutes (washer-dryer) or one minute (tower) and try again.
- Airflow problems explain most WED / WGD cases, but a clear vent leaves the heat and fan circuits to test
- We confirm your platform first because the same code names different parts
- We quote in writing first and tell you plainly when an older unit is not worth repairing
Other Dryer codes
Why does my dryer still run with F4E3?
On WED / WGD dryers the code is a warning about restricted airflow, and the dryer keeps running. It is telling you the vent path is blocked, which also lengthens drying times.
How long can my vent run be?
The allowed run length and number of elbows depend on the vent type and are listed in the installation instructions. A long run with many turns will limit airflow even when it is clean.
What if the washer-dryer shows F4E3?
Then the dryer blower motor is the area to check. The wash function still works, but the dry function will not. Unplug it for at least five minutes first, and call us if the code stays.
