What F3 E1 means

F3 E1 on a Whirlpool electric or gas dryer in the WED / WGD series, Cabrio and Duet generations included, is listed as an exhaust thermistor code. The thermistor is a temperature sensor in the exhaust air path, and the control uses it to judge how hot the air leaving the drum is. When the reading is out of range, the dryer can stop, run short, or leave clothes damp with the code on the display. It is a sensing circuit code, not proof that the heater is bad.

Common causes of F3 E1

  • Exhaust thermistor reading and its connector
  • Wiring between the sensor and the control
  • Exhaust air path restricted by lint or a crushed vent
  • What the control reports after the power is restored
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Clean the lint screen and look at the vent hose behind the dryer for a crush or kink. 2. Turn off the dryer's circuit breaker for one minute, then turn it back on. 3. Start a timed dry cycle. 4. Watch the dryer for one minute to see that F3 E1 does not reappear. 5. If it does, schedule service.

! Why to stop there
  • A sensor that reads wrong and a sensor reading a real airflow problem look alike on the display
  • We measure the thermistor and check the vent run before we name a part
  • We give a written price first, and we are honest if an older dryer is better replaced
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
F3 E1F3 E1 questions
What is an exhaust thermistor?

It is a small temperature sensor in the path of the air leaving the drum. The control reads it to manage heat. F3 E1 means that reading is not behaving as the control expects.

Can a clogged vent cause F3 E1?

A restricted vent changes exhaust temperatures and can confuse the control, so we always look at the vent. A clean path with the code still showing points to the sensor circuit itself.

Is F3 E1 the same as F3E1 on a laundry tower?

No. Your WED / WGD dryer lists an exhaust thermistor under F3 E1. Towers use F3E1 for different readings, so the same characters do not carry one meaning across all Whirlpool dryers.
