What ERR means
ERR on Whirlpool electric and gas dryers in the WED and WGD series, Cabrio and Duet generations included, such as the WGD5000DW, appears when the door has not been completely closed and latched. The dryer will not run unless the door is closed. A door can look shut without being latched, and some models have an upper and a lower latch, both of which must be secure before the dryer starts.
Common causes of ERR
- Door not pushed far enough to engage the latch or latches
- Upper or lower latch not securing
- Something caught in the door edge
- Door switch not registering
1. Push on the door to engage the latch or latches. On models with upper and lower latches, both must be secure. 2. Clear anything caught at the door edge. 3. If ERR stays, turn the dryer's breaker or breakers off for one minute, then back on. 4. Start a timed dry cycle and watch it for one minute.
- A latch that catches by hand but fails to register points to the switch or strike
- Worn latches can work only some of the time
- We test the latch and switch, and give a written price before replacing anything
Other Dryer codes
Why does ERR show when my door looks closed?
A door can look shut without being latched. Push firmly on it. Some models have an upper and a lower latch, and both must be secure.
How long should the breaker be off for ERR?
One minute. Switch the dryer's breaker or breakers off, wait one minute, switch them on, start a timed dry cycle, and watch the display for a minute.
When does ERR need service?
If the door is firmly latched and the reset does not clear ERR, the latch or door switch may not be registering. We test them and quote in writing first.
Still unsure about ERR?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
