What AF means
AF on Whirlpool electric and gas dryers in the WED and WGD series, including Cabrio and Duet generations, ties to the Check Vent indicator found on certain models with automatic cycles. During the sensing phase at the start of a cycle, the dryer watches airflow through itself and the vent system, and the light comes on if the vent is blocked or airflow is low. The dryer keeps running, but drying slows. The light clears at the end of the cycle, when you touch Power, or when you open the door.
Common causes of AF
- Lint screen packed with lint
- Crushed or kinked vent duct behind the dryer
- Lint buildup in the vent run or outside hood
- Outside vent flap stuck shut
1. Clean the lint screen: pull it straight up and roll lint off with your fingers. 2. Check that the vent hose behind the dryer is not crushed or kinked. 3. Go outside and make sure the vent hood flap opens and is free of lint. 4. Run the cycle again. The light stays on during a cycle until the cause is resolved.
- Long or bent vent runs can restrict airflow well beyond what you can see from the dryer
- Low airflow lengthens drying and can build heat, so it should not be ignored
- We check airflow and the vent path, then give a written price before any cleaning or repair
Other Dryer codes
Can I keep using the dryer with the Check Vent light on?
The dryer keeps running, but poor airflow slows drying and strains it. Clear the lint screen and vent first. A light that stays on after that deserves a vent inspection.
How do I clear the AF light?
It clears when the cycle ends, when you touch Power, or when you open the door. It will light again next cycle if the blockage is still there.
Do you clean dryer vents?
We check the vent path as part of diagnosing airflow. Tell us about the run length and where the vent exits, and we will explain what we find and quote in writing.
Still seeing AF?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
