What F36 means

F36 on Whirlpool electric radiant (smoothtop) cooktops such as the WCE55US6HS carries two readings. In one, there may be a problem with communication between the touch control module and the electronic control. In the other, there may be a problem with a temperature sensor on an induction coil. Either way, the cooktop is reporting something it cannot sort out alone. The first step is a power reset and a one-minute watch.

Common causes of F36

  • Communication between the touch module and the electronic control
  • Temperature sensor on a coil
  • Wiring or connection between those parts
  • Brief glitch cleared by a reset
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Turn all surface controls off and let the cooktop cool. 2. Switch the breaker off for one minute. 3. Turn it back on. 4. See whether F36 shows up again within a minute. 5. If F36 returns, stop cooking on it. 6. If it persists, write down which burners you were using.

! Why to stop there
  • If F36 returns, we test the communication link first and then the sensor.
  • We compare how the cooktop behaves cold and after heating.
  • The price is in writing before work, and a 30-day workmanship warranty covers the repair.
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
F36F36 questions
Why does F36 have two meanings?

The same code is described for a touch-to-control communication problem and for a temperature sensor on a coil. We test to see which one is yours.

Is a reset enough?

It clears brief glitches. If F36 comes back, one of the two problems is real, and the cooktop needs testing. We test both the link and the sensor.

Can I use the cooktop with F36 showing?

Better not. A sensor or link that is not working can leave the cooktop unable to regulate heat, which is a reason to stop. Wait for the test result before cooking.
