What F12 means

On an older Whirlpool electric radiant (smoothtop) cooktop such as the WCE55US6HS, F12 points to a possible problem with a hotplate, meaning a cooking surface, burner or element, or with the wiring that goes to it. Many Houston kitchens still have this older model, and we repair it. We also tell you plainly when a repair is not worth it. The first step is a power reset and a one-minute watch.

Common causes of F12

  • Surface element that is not behaving
  • Wiring or connection to a burner
  • Control circuit that drives the element
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Turn all surface controls off and let the glass cool. 2. Switch the cooktop's breaker off for one minute. 3. Turn it back on. 4. Stay in the kitchen for sixty seconds and watch for the code. 5. If F12 comes back, note which burner you used last and stop cooking on it.

! Why to stop there
  • If F12 returns, we test each element and its wiring to find the one involved.
  • On an older cooktop, we check whether the part is still obtainable before you decide.
  • The price is in writing first, and the repair has a 30-day workmanship warranty.
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
F12F12 questions
Does F12 mean a burner is dead?

It can. The code points to a hotplate or its wiring, so we test the elements one by one. It could also be a connection that a reset temporarily settles.

Is an older smoothtop worth repairing?

Frequently, because elements are straightforward. We give you the cost first and say plainly if a new cooktop is the wiser choice. Many cooktops of this age are still worth saving.

Should I use the other burners?

Better not to while the code is active. A wiring problem can affect more than one burner, and we would test them all. Please leave all of them off.
